Scholarship & Academic Integrity

Effective Citation and Avoiding Plagiarism

"As a student at Milton Academy, you will find that faculty, staff and administrators believe deeply in encouraging the creativity and fresh insights that you bring to the community. In this climate of trust, your teachers engage with you under the assumption that the work you submit is wholly your own, and that you will credit others for the ideas you use to support your work. When educational pursuits are grounded in honesty, respect, fairness, and accountability, the entire Milton community flourishes."

Scholarship and Academic Integrity, Milton Academy, 2024.

This guide is designed to elaborate on the concepts of plagiarism and citation as mentioned in the Milton Academy Scholarship and Academic Integrity Policy.

Explore this guide to find:

  • Examples of some different types of plagiarism and some examples of effective, honest academic writing
  • Suggestions for effective academic habits and tools to help prevent plagiarism
  • Resources to provide more detail about different styles of citation

Although we have tried to make things as clear as possible, you may have questions about what you should do for a specific citation. Individual guidelines issued by each academic department in the Milton Academy Scholarship and Academic Integrity Policy and teacher instructions for a specific assignment override anything on this general guide.

If you have additional questions about citation, please talk to your teacher or a Cox Librarian
