You've probably seen the ads for Indeed, one of the top online job listing/resume listing websites.  What that means for you is that they've gathered a lot of data about jobs -- and salaries -- across the country - perfect for you to begin your exploration.

Bureau of Labor Statistics 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics collects information on jobs and salaries from around the country; it also has lots of historical data.  The site alsos include breakdowns of the geographic locations and distributions for many jobs are, as well as an outlook for the future NOTE: The historical data is available as downloadable tables
