INQ: Research Process

Choosing a Topic

  1.  A good topic has sources (such as books, articles, websites)
  2.  Has sources that you can access
  3.  Has sources that you can access and meet the criteria of your assignment.
  4.  Finally...a good topic is the product of background research.
If a topic is too broad - developing a research question will feel overwhelming. You need to have a focus!

Too Broad
French Revolution

Better:
The French Revolution and the use of propaganda

OR

If you start out too narrow, you might have trouble finding enough sources to support a research paper.

Too Narrow:
How the French Revolution affected education for children in rural areas in southern France

Better:
How the French Revolution affected children's education.
