Uncertainty and Further Experimentation:

Discussion - Uncertainty and Further Explanation Rubric
Row 4 3 2 0 Score
23
  • Discusses all major sources of uncertainty and avoidable mistakes (errors) that are likely to have affected the outcome of experiment; includes only major sources of uncertainty

  • No mention of specific sources of uncertainty other than instrument uncertainty
  • All uncertainties are irrelevant to interpreting the data
  • Uncertainty absent

24
  • Discusses and defends well a reasonable suggestion for reducing each major uncertainty and a way to eliminate any avoidable mistake

  • Suggestions for improvement of same experiment are unclear
  • Improvements absent

25
  • Discusses a relevant next step (follow-up experiment) that could add additional value to the present work (this is not just adding an additional run or trial)

  • Suggestions for next experiment are unclear
  • Lacks explanation of how next expt links to this one or how it would expand relevant knowledge
  • Next step absent

In this section, you need to discuss ALL sources of uncertainty within your experiment.  You should only focus on scientific uncertainty (ex. temperature, pressure, contamination, etc.), and not what is deemed “human error”

  • For each uncertainty that you list in this section, you need to clearly speak to the experimental impact that it had on your experiment.  Your data (precision, etc.) can be very helpful in assessing the impact from uncertainties.

  • For each uncertainty that you list in this section, you need to discuss and well defend a reasonable suggestion for reducing each major uncertainty and a way to eliminate any avoidable mistake

  • Finally, you should wrap up this section by suggesting an alternative experiment (follow up experiment) that could add value to the one you just carried out.  This is an experiment that could potentially validate your findings by using a completely different approach to get to the same or similar answer.
